(ii) Pensions are granted at the rate of 14/50ths of salary for the first ten years service with an addition of 1/600th for each complete month of service in excess of ten years with a further addition of 1/600th in respect of each complete month of service beyond twenty years until the maximum pension of two-thirds of salary is reached.

(iii) An officer who is retired on medical grounds and who has not completed ten years service may be granted a gratuity in accordance with Police Pensions Regulations.

(iv)

An officer to whom a pension is granted may elect to draw a reduced pension of three quarters of such pension together with a cash gratuity equal to ten times one quarter of such pension.

This option must be exercised by the officer within one month of his attaining pensionable status (i.e. 10 years service).

(v) If an officer who has married in accordance with Condition No. 1 is killed in the discharge of his duty, his widow and orphans may be awarded a pension not exceeding 10/60ths of the officer's salary This maximum may be exceeded in exceptional cases. A special pension may also

be

awarded on retirement to any officer who is permanently injured in the discharge of his duty. If an unmarried officer is killed in the discharge of his duty, his legal personal representative may be granted a gratuity not exceeding one year's pensionable salary of the deceased officer.

(vi) If an officer dies from natural causes whilst scrving in the Police Force and before the date of his death has completed five years service, the Governor in Council may grant to his legal personal representative a gratuity not cxceeding one year's pensionable salary of the deceased officer.

(vii) All pensions shall, subject to the discretion of the Governor, be payable in London.

An officer joins the Force with the rank of Constable and is attached to the Police Training School. The course of instruction lasts 12 months - 7 months at the Training School, and 5 months at a Divisional Station. On passing his examination at the completion of his course of instruction he is promoted to the rank of Lance Sergeant, subject to the approval of the Inspector General of Police.

An officer is required to become efficient in drill. After passing out of the Police Training School, he will attend such routine parades as may be directed. The study of Chinese is compulsory for all European Officers and no officer will be promoted to the rank of Sergeant who has not passed the qualifying examination (First Certificate). An officer selected for promotion to the rank of Sub-Inspector who has not obtained a Second Certificate in Chinese will be required to take Chinese to the standard of the Second Certificate as a compulsory subject in the examination for
